19th Century Reed & Barton
This handsome silverplated spoon holder dates from the late 1800’s and was made by Reed & Barton of Taunton, Massachusetts. The silver finish is high gloss on the top rim, foot, and handles, while on the mid-section the silver has a “butler’s” finish (more of a matte texture). This holloware pattern is Reed & Barton’s #2940 and features a clean angular design accented with an embossed frieze consisting of ornate panels shaped like hanging tapestries. This spooner stands 4 ½” (11.4 cm) tall at the handles. It is engraved on one side only with the monogram “P” and has an opulent parcel gilt interior.
Condition: This piece is in excellent condition, with a brilliant shine and no wear to the silver. The interior gold has thinned a bit over the years and is not as deep a yellow as it was originally. The interior has some scratches, but they are not as severe as we usually find on old spooners. The exterior has only a few small scratches. There are a couple of tiny dark spots on the edge of the interior floor.
