Relisted * 1924 Deforest D10 Radio W/original Loop * Superb Condition & Working For Sale

This item is being relisted due to a non-paying buyer. Please make sure that you have the wherewithal to purchase this radio before you place a offer. And please make sure to check out all of my sales after you've looked at this one. I've put together a broad, beautiful assortment of museum quality technological and musical gadgetry this week, so regardless of what you like to collect, I think you'll find something that interests you.

Here's a beautiful, working 1924 DeForest D-10 Radiophone, perhaps the most iconic radio of the early 1920's and one of only a handful of American radios to have been sold in a gated "smoker's cabinet." This particular D-10 comes with its original Deforest loop antenna, all five of its original plug-in RF transformers, all three of its original AF transformers, a complete set of 01A tubes for use when playing the radio (they all have good emissions); and a complete set of Deforest Audions for use when displaying the radio (they all have open filaments and are non-working). I'll also include a copy (in PDF format, on a CD-ROM) of the original owner's manual.

As you can see in the photographs, the radio is in excellent to near mint condition throughout, and the loop is an original deForest aerial, not the reproduction that typically accompanies this set. The mahogany cabinet is pristine, with no damage or compromised areas anywhere, and its factory finish is still intact. All three nickel-plated door pulls are original, and they are still snugly seated in the doors. The lower battery box is clean, and the original paper labels inside of it are clean as well, with only minor wear. Likewise, the paper transformer chart on the underside of the lid is clean, with only minor wear. The engraved bakelite panel is clean, with no damage and no blotching, and it retains its original lettering. The knobs and dials are close to perfect. No chips, no cracks, no scarred bakelite. The unique, cam-driven deForest crystal detector is original, as are the cat's whisker and crystal. The cam still works smoothly and the detector arm stays put once the cat's whisker is moved into position. All four original battery wires (green and red sheathing) are still present on the chassis, neatly coiled on the underside of the tube deck. The filament switch is original, as are both of the rheostats. The wiring is all neat and original. The interstage and output transformers are original and rust-free. The output transformer has been neatly bridged with a capacitor and a resistor so that the radio can be operated with audio output sufficient to power a 1920's horn loudspeaker as well as a pair of headphones. All dials and knobs turn smoothly and work properly. Both condensers turn smoothly and hold their position once a station is tuned. All five RF coils are included with the radio, and their condition, like that of the radio itself, is excellent. No cracks in their bakelite cases, no bent or broken legs. The original Deforest loop antenna is in excellent condition, with a nearly perfect factory decal on the centerpiece. Original nickel-plated screws and fittings (the repro loops have brass screws and fittings.) The green silk sheathing is clean and undamaged, with only minor fading and no significant fraying. The litz wire is continous, with just a few soldered splices adjacent to the securing screws. The wood poles are all in great condition, with their original finish still intact. The bakelite sections are are also in excellent condition, with no cracks or other damage. The radio comes with a complete set of good tubes and will be ready to play or display as soon as it arrives. As noted above, the set still works. If you wish to operate it, you'll need a regulated DC power supply (I'd recommend an ARBE III), a good ground connection inside your house, a reasonably long outdoor antenna for distant reception (the loop may work fine by itself if you have a very strong local AM station), a ca. 1920's horn speaker or headset, and some basic knowledge of how to operate a ca. 1920's battery radio. Even if you're new to battery radios, however, it shouldn't take too long to figure this set out. The trickiest part is adjusting the detector arm so that the catwhisker is resting on a "hot" spot on the crystal. That's about it. I've been shipping antique radios and phonographs for years, and I can assure you this radio will arrive on your doorstep in the same condition that it leaves mine.
