ORIGINAL
REPUBLIC OF TEXAS
$50 Banknote
Dated: Dec. 10th (I think), 1839

This item is an original Republic Of Texas $50bank note which I've had for 35 years or so having purchased it from Criswell's in the late 1970s. Great graphics of two sailing ships, frolicing topless "gal-in-a-glade"(with two dogs? by her side)in the upper left, and some guy of apparent note framed on the right side (Austin? Houston?).

It is hand numbered (No. 0843 or maybe 6843?) and hand signed by the treasurer and president of Texas. As I understand it this one dates the year afterSam Houstonwas President and ended "signing" the notes. I read somewhere that he had one appointed "signer" of the notes for him since he personally couldn't physically sign notes due toan old war injury. (Incidentally, Ido have a Houston "signed" example - $50 denomination & 1838 date -that I will be offering in the near future.)

Condition of the bank note is very good to my eye, though beingalmost exclusively a bottle collector,I am not much experienced intheterminology ofpaper money grading. I've compared it to the images of many listings of Texas banknoteson and it is a better than average example compared to many/most. Though cancelled in three places (small, very straight andfinely done "X" cuts) none are near the edge of the bill, no pieces are missing (likesome I've seen on ), and as the images show the very finely executedcuts are essentially invisible unless one picks the bill up and bends it slightly to see the locations. There are no chips/pieces missing from the edges of the note, no repairs, distracting creases (faint ones), and the paper has a pleasant overallcream hue to it with

The best thing is to just look at the enlarged images of both sides of this note and use your judgement as to the condition. To my eye the note is quite clean, solid & sound (for 175 year old "onion skin" type paper), and just plain nice.
What a great piece of Texas - and American - history!
