Rhiannon
A chronological history of the Art Print.
This is a history of this Limited Edition Print. (personal experience and as much as I could research) linked with my fortune in joining this path of history.
1979, Stevie Nicks\' dad and uncle (Jess & Gene) leased part of an amusement park called Legend City (including a 2 story old west-style office building), which was located on the border of Tempe and Phoenix, in Arizona. There they created an outdoor amphi-theatre they called Compton Terrace, in honor of the late William Edward Compton, a local radio program director who had originally introduced Stevie Nicks to the Phoenix airwaves. Jess and Gene then started booking concerts at the Terrace.
1982, I started working across the street from Compton Terrace, providing security for the local power and water company. At this time in my life I was a Rodeo-riding cowboy-type who listened to country and classical music (go figure), and was not familiar with Stevie Nicks.
1982, October 12th, Stevie finishes Rhiannon, a painting she made in tribute to her best friend Robin, who died of Leukemia around the completion of the work.
1983, mid-year, it is announced that Legend City (including Compton Terrace) had been bought and will soon to be the location of a high-rise building.
1983, September 25th, Stevie\'s dad holds a benefit concert starring Stevie, Kenny Loggins, and Joe Walsh called \"Stevie Nicks and Friends.\" The limited edition Rhiannon Art Print was sold at this concert.
1983, November, the amusement park and Compton Terrace is closed permanently.
1984, around January, small signs were hung around the old park noting a day the old west-style buildings, which made up Legend City, would be saleed off. The signs were so small I had to stop on the road and get out of my vehicle just to read one of them. I decided I wanted to buy the train station. It was a beautiful building I would dismantle and move to a piece of property I owned. The day of the sale only a handful of people showed up. The train station commanded a price out of my reach. I ended up buying a 2-story old west-style office building (remember the building at the beginning of this history?). I brought my dad and brother in on the project of dismantling the building and salvaging the materials. I had 30 days to remove what I wanted before construction started on the high-rise. We started our work by removing items from the inside of the building like a pop machine, antique bank teller booths, bathroom fixtures, etc. During this part of the project I found Art Prints neatly wrapped. They were 18\" x 24\" in size, and individually numbered. The Art Prints had Stevie Nicks name on them and the date of 10-12-82.Time goes by, 2007, 23 years later. As I was having a conversation with my friend Ben, also nicknamed\" The Big Pistole\" (also a Stevie Nicks fan) about Stevie Nicks, I told him of the Prints I had in storageā€¦.The rest is history. Until this time, I honestly had no idea there would potentially be a want for them. I dug them out of storage and found they survived the past 23-years in pristine condition.WHERE ARE ALL THE ART PRINTS ?
Of the original 5000 Art Prints, the first 214 were missing from the Compton Terrace stack that I found in my building. I assume the Nicks family kept some, and the rest were sold at the benefit concert held onSeptember 25, 1983. The left over Prints were divided among my dad, brother, and myself.
This may be hard for the fans of Stevie Nicks to take but my dad, brother, and I split the stack of Prints between us (all of us ignorant on who Stevie Nicks was). I, having some knowledge of numbered Prints, grabbed the lowest numbered ones and stuck them away. My dad and brother used their Prints as drop cloths, wadded packing material, doodle sheets, etc.not knowing of there possible value. My Mother actually used many of these as pantry shelf paper !!!
MOST of these Art Prints that I bought have been destroyed over the years much to my chagrin.I present to you the Rhiannon limited edition Art Print number 480 of 5000 for your review. I learned a lot about Stevie over the past months and I know her fans will love having a piece of her artwork previously unavailable for 30+ years. One Internet site recently noted of Rhiannon that Stevie Nicks has thirty pieces of artwork but that this is the only piece she considers finished, and that this truly rare jewel was completed in 1982 as a tribute to her close friend Robin, who lost her battle with leukemia.
Rhiannon
A history
Stevie Nicks first encounter with the name Rhiannon was when she read the book Triad, written by Mary Leader. She thought it was a \"really beautiful name\". Shortly after reading the name, she was inspired to write the song Rhiannon. Later she learned of another Rhiannon, a Welsh moon goddess, with uncanny similarities.
Rhiannon is the Welsh moon goddess and goddess of the dawn, who is identical with Rigantona, meaning \"Great Queen.\" A mother and fertility goddess, later she became the goddess Nimue, or Vivien, who was the Lady of the Lake in Arthurian myth. She was a shapeshifter and often appeared as a white horse. As a mare-headed goddess, she carried the dead to the underworld, where she also reigned. She was always accompanied by birds to welcome the seasons, and three birds in particular who could either kill the living or restore the dead back to life. She is a muse of poets, the source of all inspiration, and sweet singing sirens were called \"the birds of Rhiannon.\"
In the late 1970\'s and early 80\'s, Stevie Nicks was working hard on a Rhiannon film project. She wrote many songs for the soundtrack of the film, including Forest of the Black Roses and Maker of the Birds (aka Three Birds of Rhiannon). The motion picture project never got off the ground and all the songs ended up in her vault, unfortunately to never be released.
In April of 1998 Stevie was asked about Forest of the Black Roses and she said she was saving it along with a group of 9 other songs that she calls her Rhiannon songs, to eventually be released together. Maybe her project is not dead after all!
Further information about this Art Print can be found at Stevie\'s website, in here own words dot com. (put all those words together to get to the sight.
Sorry I have to list it that way, but no longer allows me to pay homage to her sight directly.
In recent years Stevie is on tour again, sounding maybe even better than she used to if that is possible. Way to go STEVIE !!!
