OF THE ILLUSTRATORS, VIRGIL SOLIS & JOST AMMAN Virgil Solis or Virgilius Solis (1514 – 1 August 1562), a member of a prolific family of artists, was a German draughtsman worked in his native city of Nuremberg. His prints were sold separately or formed the illustrations of books; many prints signed by him are probably by assistants. After his death his widow married his assistant and continued the workshop into the early seventeenth century. His woodcuts illustrating Ovid were especially influential, though partly borrowing from earlier illustrations by the French artist Bernard Salomon. They were reprinted and copied in many different editions, in Latin and translations into various languages; the Ovid from which the illustration at right has been taken was printed at Frankfurt in 1581. He published inarmorial of the Holy Roman Empire in 1555. Jost Amman was an assistant of Solis' before starting his own workshop.

Jost Amman (June 13, 1539 – March 17, 1591) was a Swiss artist, celebrated chiefly for his woodcuts, done mainly for book illustrations. Amman was born in Zurich, the son of a professor of Classics and Logic. He was himself well-educated. Little of his personal history is known beyond the fact that he moved to Nuremberg in 1560, where he continued to reside until his death in March 1591. He worked initially with Virgil Solis, then a leading producer of book illustrations. His productiveness was very remarkable, as may be gathered from the statement of one of his pupils, that the drawings he made during a period of four years would have filled a hay wagon. A large number of his original drawings are in the Berlin print room. About 1,500 prints are attributed to him. He was one of the last major producers of woodcuts for books, as during his career engravings were gradually taking over that role. Although like most artists for woodcut he normally let a specialist formschneider cut the block to his drawing, he sometimes included both a cutter's knife and a quill pen in his signature on prints, suggesting he sometimes cut his own blocks.

A series of engravings by Amman of the kings of France, with short biographies, appeared in Frankfurt in 1576. He also executed many of the woodcut illustrations for the Bible published at Frankfurt by Sigismund Feierabend. Another serial work, the Panoplia Omnium Liberalium Mechanicarum et Seden-tariarum Artium Genera Continens, containing 115 plates, is of great value. Amman's drawing is correct and spirited, and his delineation of the details of costume is minute and accurate. Paintings in oil and on glass are attributed to him, but none have been identified.Amman died in Nuremberg, Bavaria, aged 51.

OF THE AUTHOR, ADAM REISSNER Adam Reusner, also Reissner or Reißner, (c.1496 - 1575 (some claim 1572 or 1582) ) in Mindelheim) was a German mystic, historian, hymn-writer and poet. He studied at Heidelberg University in 1518 and was a pupil of Johannes Reuchlin, studying Hebrew and Greek under him 1521. In 1523 he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg, where he was amongst the likes of Martin Luther, Philipp Melanchthon, Justus Jonas, and pursued a degree in theology.

From 1526 to 1528, he was the private secretary of the captain Georg von Frundsberg to the German mercenaries in Italy. He witnessed the Storming of Rome of the Italian War of 1521–1526, along with his friend Jakob Ziegler. He then became an independent scholar teaching theology in Strasbourg, where he was a friend and spiritualistic supporter of Kaspar Schwenckfeld. In 1532-1548 he worked as a chronicler in his native Mindelheim, but he lost this position as a result of the Schmalkaldic War. He lived for a number of years in Frankfurt, working as a scholar until at least 1563, but appears to have returned to live in his native town before his death. He was quoted in Korte Reis by Solomon Schweiger who was visiting Jerusalem at the time.

As a scholar, he wrote historical and theological works, including an "anti-papal history." The present book, his ‘Jerusalem,’ is probably the best known of his larger works. He later became known as a hymn writer from about 1530. He paraphrased psalms for thePsalter of Sigmund Hemmel. His hymn In dich hab ich gehoffet, Herr (In you, Lord, have I put my trust) is still included in the German hymnal. Its fifth stanza, "Mir hat die Welt trüglich gericht't" (The world has judged me deceitfully), appears in Bach's St Matthew Passion. A hymnal at Wolfenbüttel. Tegliches Gesangbuch ... durch Adam Reusner (Daily Songbook ... by Adam Reusner) contains more than forty of his hymns.

THE VOLUME IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION INTERNALLY, with clean pages, clear print and ample margins throughout. The beautiful woodcuts are excellent impressions in all cases. The title pages of the first and third parts are toned, with minor and occasional foxing in the third part. Generally, though, this is an unusually attractive example internally.

THE 16TH CENTURY BLINDSTAMPED VELLUM BINDING OVER WOODEN BOARDS IS ALSO IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, with strong hinges, a strong book-block, and only minor wear at the edges and corners. The spine is divided by large, raised bands into 6 compartments. The title appears in faded manuscript in the uppermost compartment. The vellum has peeled a little from the lower outer corner of the rear board. There are a couple of very small wormholes at the head of the spine. The impressions of the blindstamped decorations upon the inner panels of both boards are a little less strong than one would ideally like. As is almost universally the case in 16th and 17th century bindings, the vellum is a little toned and shows a few small stains upon the boards. This may be seen clearly in the photos below. The volume measures about 33 cm by 21 cm by 8 cm; each leaf measures about 310 mm by 193 mm.

THE VOLUME IS COMPLETE IN ALL RESPECTS. The first part is foliated [14], cxxxv, [7]. The second part is foliated [7], ccxxvii, [13]. The third part is foliated [4], ccxvii.

In all, this is an exceptionally attractive example of THE BEAUTIFUL, RARE AND VERY DESIRABLE 1565-69 EDITION OF ADAM REISSNER’S ’ ‘JERUSALEM,’ INCLUDING THE 1565 SECOND EDITIONS OF THE FIRST TWO PARTS, AND THE 1569 FIRST EDITION OF THE VERY RARE THIRD PART, printed in gothic type at Frankfurt am Main in folio by Georg Raben, Sigmund Feyerabend, and Weygand Hanen Erben in 1565 (first two parts) and 1569 (third part), ADORNED WITH FULLY 77 WOODCUT ILLUSTRATIONS BY VIRGIL SOLIS AND JOST AMMAN DEPICTING THE CITY OF JERUSALEM AND BIBLICAL SCENES FROM JERUSALEM, FURTHER ADORNED WITH A DOUBLE-PAGE OBLIQUE VIEW OF JERUSALEM IN REMARKABLE DETAIL AND A FINE DOUBLE-PAGE MAP OF THE MEDITERRANEAN, all three parts bound together IN THE ORIGINAL MID 16TH CENTURY BLINDSTAMPED VELLUM OVER WOODEN BOARDS, WITH THE ORIGINAL METAL CLASPS PRESENT AND IN PERFECT WORKING ORDER, THE BINDINGS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AND ENTIRELY UNRESTORED, THE THREE PARTS COMPLETE IN ALL RESPECTS AND IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, and OFFERED WITH .
