Robert Mercer Taliaferro Hunter (1809-1887) of Virginia was elected as a States Rights Whig to the U.S. Congress (1837-1843, 1845-1847), serving one term as Speaker of the House (1839-1841). He served in the U.S. Senate from 1847 until he was expelled in 1861 for actively promoting secession from the Union. Hunter was Secretary of State of the Confederacy from 1861-1862. Serving for the remainder of the war in the Confederate Congress, he often opposed the policies of President Jefferson Davis. Hunter was part of the three-member Confederate peace commission which met unsuccessfully with President Lincoln at Hampton Roads, Virginia in February 1865
