Rolanda Haloo crafted this wonderful inlaid pin/pendant with Mexican Fire Opal and Australian Opal stones. The piece is .5 ounces on a digital postal scale and is 2 inches tall by 2 and 5/8 inches wide. This artist is a well known Zuni jeweler particularly famous for her colorful inlaid silver dragonflies. She is the former wife and past collaborator of Zuni silversmith Harlan Coonsis and the mother of acclaimed jeweler Colin Coonsis.
We came upon Rolanda's work a number of years ago on one of our early trips to New Mexico. Finally, we met her, her daughter Holly and son Colin several years ago. She and her family are terrific people and we were fortunate to get to know them.
Rolanda displays great sensitivity to color and form in her work, but she is not a prolific craftsman in her output; although, she isvery highly regarded. For more information about her life and her work, consult Gregory Schaaf's book AMERICAN INDIAN JEWELRY I, published in 2003, page 170.
