On May 18, 1978, the USPS issued the stamp commemorating Dr. George Papanicolaou, the inventor of the PAP smear for early cancer detection. The ceremony was held at the White House and Rosalynn Carter was the hostess of the ceremony. She signed the program which consists of six panels. The stamp is also cancelled "first day of issue."
