This highway was known as 'the devils highway' and 'the highway to hell'. The road no longer exists in part because the signs were stolen with great regularity. Our signs are so authentic they are made in a factory that made signs for states in the 1930's and 40's. The same machine and dies that were used then are used today. An American business, family owned, just like mine.
THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST
U.S.Highway 666 came into being with the actions of AASHO9American Association of State Highway Officials) November 11, 1926. They established the route from Gallup, New Mexico to Cortez, Colorado as U.S. 666. That stretch of road was 141 miles long.
Actions by AASHO extended U.S. 666 from Gallup to Douglas, Arizona by 1942. They used the Coronado Trail that is a very difficult, barren roadway that climbs above 9,000 feet along cliff-hanging hairpin twists and turns. One 60 mile stretch has over 400 curves-many at 10 mph of less. One is rewarded with jaw dropping views and panoramas of pine covered ridges reaching to the horizon. This made the total length 556 miles long.
June 1970 saw U.S. 666 extended to Monticello, Utah. That made the total mileage 605 miles. This total was relatively short lived, as in June 1992 the route became U.S. 191 in Arizona. U.S. 666 survived from Gallup to Monticello. In 2003 New Mexico, Colorado and Utah jointly requested that 666 be dropped as the route number. As of May 31, 2003 they had succeeded in removing the number of the beast.
The road has been called The Devil's Highway and The Highway to Hell and drivers over the years have claimed to see apparitions while driving, especially at night.
This sign is made of 18 gauge steel, deep embossed, enamel painted and baked, conforming to the U S standard for highway markers as defined in 1929. Sign is 16" by 16 1/2" at the points of the shield. We include an excerpted copy of the manual that applied, free with your sign.
Bullet holed, rusted, bent signs purporting to have been in front of Uncle Herb's farm sell for $200-$2000. Our signs are modestly priced at $35.00, ships UPS Ground within continental U.S. #NM666
