Royalty 1860s cdv QUEEN VICTORIA with PRINCESS HELENA (1846-1923) by Ghemar Freres

This is a vintage carte-de-visite (cdv) albumen photograph (possibly copied from a retouched print) from the 1860s showing Queen Victoria of England (left) with her third daughter and fifth child, Princess Helena (right). Helena\'s full name was Helena Augusta Victoria

According to Wikipedia,

Helena was educated by private tutors chosen by her father and his close friend and adviser, Baron Stockmar. Her childhood was spent with her parents, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, travelling between the variety of royal residences in Britain. The intimate atmosphere of the royal court came to an end on 14 December 1861, when her father died and her mother entered a period of intense mourning. In the early 1860s, Helena began a flirtation with Prince Albert\'s German librarian, Carl Ruland. Although the nature of the relationship is largely unknown, Helena\'s romantic letters to Ruland survive. After the Queen found out in 1863, she dismissed Ruland, who returned to his native Germany. Three years later, on 5 July 1866, Helena married the impoverished German Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein. The couple remained in Britain, in calling distance of the Queen, who liked to have her daughters nearby, and Helena along with her youngest sister, Princess Beatrice, became the Queen\'s unofficial secretary. However, after Queen Victoria\'s death on 22 January 1901, Helena saw relatively little of her surviving siblings.

Helena was the most active member of the royal family, carrying out an extensive programme of royal engagements at a time when royalty was not expected to appear often in public. She was also an active patron of charities, and was one of the founding members of the Red Cross. She was founding president of the Royal School of Needlework, and president of the Royal British Nurses\' Association. As president of the latter, she was a strong supporter of nurse registration against the advice of Florence Nightingale. She became the first member of her family to celebrate her 50th wedding anniversary in 1916, but her husband died a year later. Helena outlived him by six years, and died aged 77 at Schomberg House on 9 June 1923.

Helena married Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein in 1867 and had six children with him, only four of which lived into adulthood.

The vintage 2½\" x 4\" cdv is in very good condition with good contrast but does have some minor soiling on the surface (see photos).

The backmark, along with the printing on the front underneath the image, says the image was produced by Ghemar Freres in Brussels, Belgium; he specialized in royalty photographs. There is also printing on the back saying that the photograph was copyrighted and published by A. Marion, Son & Co. in London.

SHIPPING: Domestic shipping is $6.00 via USPS First Class Mail Parcel or $9.50 via Priority Mail with delivery confirmation.

The shipping fee also includes postal insurance plus the additional fees imposed by and PayPal on the shipping charges, which amounts to an additional 15% on top of the fees charged by the post office. Shipping discounts are available for multiple purchases shipped to the same address in the same box.

International buyers please note: The shipping charges you pay when purchasing this item do not include import duties, taxes, broker\'s fees, or other charges that may be imposed by government officials or Customs brokers in your country. Please check your country\'s import regulations if you want to be informed about any additional charges that may be imposed on your package when it arrives.

PAYPAL PAYMENT REQUIREMENTS: Visa and MasterCard are accepted through PayPal for domestic purchases. For international purchases, because of PayPal and \'s very strict rules regarding proof-of-shipment for sellers, if you want to pay for the item using PayPal, and the item sells for less than $750.00, I can only accept a PayPal payment if you are willing to pay for USPS Priority Mail Express International or Priority Mail International shipping. They are the only on-line-trackable shipping methods offered by our US Postal System to international destinations, and an on-line-trackable shipping method is a PayPal and requirement. If the item sells for more than $750.00, then Priority Mail Express International is the ONLY shipping option available because it is the only service that requires a signature upon delivery. PayPal and both require signature confirmation on packages worth more than $750.00.

Additionally (for both domestic and international purchasers), if you pay for the item using PayPal, there are two Priority Mail services I cannot offer, their Flat-Rate Envelope and Small Flat-Rate Box. Neither of these two services are trackable (or insurable), and they are therefore against PayPal and \'s rules.

PAYMENT OPTIONS: has made changes to their payment rules whereby (in \'s own words) \"Beginning in late October [2008], sellers will no longer be allowed to offer [any traditional person-to-person paper] payment methods on . Only approved electronic methods will be allowed.\" As a seller, now prohibits me from even using the words that describe what those traditional paper-transaction payment methods are. strongly encourages all buyers to pay for their items by using PayPal (previously an -owned company). I accept PayPal, and encourage you to use it, but I will not force you to use it. \'s rules also state \"A seller can accept [paper payments] from a buyer if (and only if) the buyer requests it. We will not take action against a seller who is trying to accommodate their buyer, complete a sale and be in compliance with the policy. Sellers cannot in any way solicit [paper payments] from a buyer.\" So, let me be clear, I am not, in any way, soliciting you to use any payment method other than PayPal, I am simply informing you (the buyer) of all of \'s rules, which state that if you (the buyer) request a different payment option other than PayPal, I can accept it.
