Russian Niello Silver, Sterling Snuff Box, Circa Early 1800's For Sale
I have added a description to each of the individual pictures so that you know specifically what you are looking at in each picture, but will also include a description here. You are offerding on an antique Russian niello silver snuff box. The dimensions are as follows: 2.5" long, 1.75" wide, and just over 1/2" deep. The hinge is in perfect condition and the box opens and closes smoothly as it should. The front of the box depicts a nude siren (woman) riding upon a mythical creature known as a hippocampus (or a half horse half mermaid) The back of the box depicts a palace or large homestead and all sides of the box depict buildings or a town. On the inside are 5 marks, two on the lid and 3 on the inner bottom of the box. The left most marking on the lid appears to be the russian characters "OB" while the one to the right is an odd shape that I believe is the mark of origin. On the bottom inside the mark to the very right is the same as the one on the top right, which appears to be an "OB". The next mark is a bit more worn, but when evaluated by an antique appraiser I was told it is the russian characters "NA". And the last mark is also quite worn but confirmed to be "84" which would be the russian silver standard mark of the time. There is also what could be a mark on the inner lid lip, but I can neither make it out nor get a very good picture of it... It is shown in the photographs. Last but not least there are some notable etchings on the inside, very faint, but can be seen from just the right angle (also included in the photos section) It appears that someone scribed the numbers "3/81/14" as well as the roman numerals "VXI-" and what appears to possibly be some russian characters. These are obviously not the original makers marks, but perhaps noteworthy and could possibly mean something... not sure! The box is believed to be from the early 1800's. It shows some wear, most of which being on the back of the box. I have tried to describe the box to the best of my ability and provide photographs which accurately depict the box. If you have any questions or would like to request any additional photographs just send me a message. I am doing such a short sale on the box because I really need the money to take my sick doggie to the vet :-( Thanks for your consideration on my sale. If anyone would like to "but it now" and there and not yet any offers on the box I can negotiate a "buy it now" price with you.
