S. Clay Wilson Grist 9 Rare 1966 Zine Underground Comic Comix 2nd Appearance For Sale
[S. Clay Wilson] Fowler, John, ed. Grist 9. Lawrence, KS: Grist, 1966. First edition. 4to, 40 pp., saddle-stapled in photographically illustrated wraps. With mailing label (to fellow little mag Ole) still intact to cover. Ninth issue of one of the greatest little magazines of the sixties, this issue notable for the inclusion of work by Steven C. Wilson, later known as S. Clay Wilson - this is thought to be one of the first two appearances of his work, predated only by his earlier appearance in Grist 7 that same year. Wilson's piece is entitled "Big Wayne's" and features members of a "deviate sub-culture". Also, contributions from d. a. levy, Frank O'Hara, Ted Berrigan (with a tribute to the recently deceased O'Hara), F. Eugene Warren, Allen Ginsberg, David Forslund, BarbaraMoraff, Jerome Rothenberg, Erik Kiviat, Ronald Silliman, Ottone M. Riccio, Tuli Kupferberg, Lillie D. Chaffin, Larry Eigner, James McCrary, George Kimball, and Mike Elzea. Unfortunately, this copy suffers from a 2" area cut out from the middle of one page, affecting the Malanga centerfold and part of O'Hara's poem - it also features underlining in ink in several places, though neither of these pieces affect the Wilson piece - fair only, but uncommon.
