The Dupont fountain pen shown below has been in my collection since the 1990s and was purchased from a major London sale House which specialized in writing equipment (where it was catalogued as “mint/boxed”). It has had little use since then, is a genuine Dupont product and comes complete with the original Dupont case and inserts.

Please see the note below regarding the ink-flow.

History and Condition

This Dupont “Gatsby” fountain pen was purchased in London during the 1990s. It has been little used since being purchased and remains in excellent condition with some surface scuffing to the metal but no damage. The main reason why I did not use the pen more than I did was due to the ink-flow which I found to be poor. This could be the result of my preference for bottled ink rather than cartridges, or could be down to the EF (Extra Fine) nib. However, I found that the pen had a tendency to clog (when used with bottled ink) when not in constant use. Once the ink flow started it was a pleasant writer with a smooth fine nib. I have experienced this behaviour with other modern pens and the remedy appears to be to use cartridges, but I have also been informed that soaking the feed overnight may help the problem of reduced ink-flow.

Please note that in a collecting career of over twenty years I was internationally recognized as an expert on the history of fountain pens and writing equipment in general. I wrote the original text on which the chapters dealing with the major British pen makers — Swan, Onoto, Conway Stewart, etc — were based in two well-known books (“Fountain Pens: Vintage and Modern” and “Fountain Pens of the World”). During the 1980s and 1990s I was a member of the Writing Equipment Society and the Society of Scribes and Illuminators, as well as being the UK correspondent for an American pen magazine.
