Genuine S.T. Dupont Soubreny Maki-E lighter. Artisan applied Maki-E Tiger decoration over black Chinese lacquer \'Soubreny\' Lighter. These lighters were only ever \'made to order\'. The customer would prepay and Dupont would manufacture a plain black lacquer lighter which would be sent to Japan where the lighter would be hand-decorated by a master Maki-E craftsman with a special lacquer containing 24 carat gold powder using a traditional technique: layer upon layer of the lacquer is applied with drying and polishing in between each application. Many hours of handwork goes into each piece and the finished article takes an average of 16 weeks to produce. Each Maki-E lighter is unique. This piece was ordered at Harrods, Knightsbridge, London in November 1997. The lighter has signs of light use commensurate with age but is in very good condition. Workingwell. 46 x 33 x 15mm.
