Sailor Souvenir 19th Century Japanese Export Silk Embroidery For Sale
VERY NICE EXAMPLE OF THE SORT OF SOUVENIR AN AMERICAN SAILOR WOULD BRING BACK FROM A VISIT TO JAPAN. I GOT IT A LONG TIME AGO HERE IN THE NEW LONDON AREA, SO PERHAPS IT WAS BROUGHT BACK BY ONE OF OUR OWN SAILORS. I HAVE DONE MY BEST TO SHOW THE CONDITION, WHICH I WOULD CALL GOOD. THE BOTTOM PART HAS SOME SLIGHT DISCOLORATION, BUT IT DOESN'T TAKE AWAY FROM THE OVERALL PIECE. THE BACK OF THE FRAME HAS A HOLE CUT IN THE WOOD WHICH LINES UP WITH THE GLASS EYE OF THE EAGLE. MAYBE SOMEONE USED IT TO DO SOME SPYING, OR PERHAPS THEY PUT SOME SORT OF LIGHT BEHIND IT FOR A LIT EAGLE'S EYE. IN ANY EVENT, IT'S NOT OBVIOUS FROM THE FRONT. THE PIECE MEASURES 24" X 26". YES, THAT'S MY RIGHT FOOT AT THE BOTTOM RIGHT OF THE FIRST PICTURE. IT'S 95 DEGREES HERE TODAY, THUS NAKED TOES. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE.
