Oscar Wilde,John Lane The Bodley Head, London, 1907, (published 1906 but dated 1907)Original gilt decorated covers.Aubrey Beardsley (illustrator). First Thus. 8vo8.5" x 7". This is the first edition to havethe full suite of thesixteen fantasticBeardsley illustrations. Introduction by Robert Ross. The gilt embossed coversare a little rubbed/bumped, gilt a bit dulled, spine is a bit faded, rubbed a little at the head and tail. Inside hinges strong, end-papers toned/browned, pages age toned, some spotting/marking, some offsetting from the plates, as normal. Includes the the cast performance of "Salome", dated 1905inserted in the centre, which has quite a wide glue marks/spots on the inner margin, (shown in the pictures). This is the true first printing with the 16 full-page plates. Extremely rare and one of Beardsley most highly prized Editions.
The early English editions of Wilde's Salome were published with only thirteen of Beardsley's drawings, including the decorative borders for the title page, list of plates and colphon. Some of these illustrations were also toned down for publication. The three cancelled drawings and the others in the form of their original, uncensored designsare published here in this edition for thefirst time,published in the John Lane edition issued in september 1906 (dated 1907)
The only othermore highly prized edition is the Limited EditionPortfolio of Salome which has the extra plate "Salome on Settle", which does not appear in anyother edition, (Contains 17 large loose plates in total)I will be also selling a copy of this Portfolio.
