SASHA HARLEQUIN/GUITARIST

LIMITED EDITION.

Being Sold As Is

From the Estate of Virginia "Ginny" Williamson.

Sasha dolls were created by a Swiss artist called Sasha Morgenthaler. Born in 1893, she led the most extraordinary life. Within her lifetime she was an artist, toy-maker, wife and mother: and also trained to be a midwife. She first began making dolls in her forties. Her first dolls were called studio dolls, and were produced from 1942-1975. These dolls were handmade and expensive to buy. Sasha's hopes for all children to be able to have access to her dolls resulted in them being produced in series. On the 11th May 1964 Puppenfabrik Hans Gotz were granted a licence to produce Sasha dolls in series. The first Sasha dolls went on sale in all Migros stores (Switzerland) on 8th October 1965. The English Stockport Sasha was initially made by Frido Limited in 1965 and from January 1970 by Trendon Limited and from September 1984 SashaDolls Limited became the selling company until 1986 when the factory closed.

The English made Sasha Dolls wereproduced at Stockport, Cheshire by John and Sara Doggart who ran the factory for over twenty years. Sasha Morgenthaler became good friends with the Doggarts; and would often visit the factory, sharing ideas and giving practical help such as showing how to cut hair and paint dolls eyes. Sasha Morgenthaler travelled the world many times over, bringing joy to many children and adults. Sadly, in 1975 Sasha Morgenthaler passed away leaving behind her a legend. In 1995 Sasha dolls were again produced by Gotz until 2001. Most Sasha dolls produced in Germany have Gotz marked on their bodies; but there are a minor few who do not due to a factory error. English dolls have no markings; making them easily identifiable compared with a Gotz Sasha.

Sasha dolls are made of hard vinyl with rooted hair, with the exception of the limited edition dolls, who mostly wore wigs. The earliest dolls had sprayed and hand-painted eyes and the later dolls had printed eyes with some handfinishing. All Sasha dolls are strung together with elastic cord. The colour of the cord indicates when the doll was produced; so being an excellent way of dating them along with hairstyle, eye-painting and the actual height of the doll. Dolls varied greatly in height. They started of at 15.5 inches, but by the end of manufacture were approx 17 inches this being due to moulds being re-cast many times.

Another precious Sasha girl... Mint condtion, but has been displayed. She retains all of her accessories, including her guitar and straw hat.

Her box is good.. but not in mint condition.

Harlequin is from a Limited edition of 1984/543. She has her original coa signed by Sara Doggart from Stockport , England. She has the number 1984 on the back of her neck.

I will be listing more Sashas over the coming weeks, so please be sure to check back to my sales.

Thank you.
