An ALMOST UNCIRCULATED example 1790 Spanish Gold 8 Escudos Doubloon of King Charles IIII. This coin was minted at the Spanish Colonial mint of Popayan. Spanish gold and silver coins were accepted as specie in transactions in the United States until Congress demonetised foreign currency in 1857.
THIS IS THE SCARCE "TRANSITIONAL" TYPE WITH THE TITLES OF CHARLES IV AND THE PORTRAIT OF HIS FATHER, CHARLES III. THERE WAS NO EXAMPLE OF THIS DATE IN THE EXTENSIVE HUNTINGDON COLLECTION OF 8 ESCUDOS WHICH WAS RECENTLY SOLD.
