This medal appears to be a scarce named Zulu War medallion/medal
awarded to a Native Trooper fighting on the side British Forces
during the campaigns against the Zulus in 1879.
These would include Isandhlwana & Rorke's Drift.Could also possibly be a "memorial" medal to a native casualty
or for an Act of Bravery. Have never seen something like this before.Victorian Crown with ring suspender.
Cartouche-style medal.
Obverse decoration in relief.
TROOPER P. MABENDA engraved on the reverse. Embossed date "1879"on reverse.

On 13-May-13 at 09:44:09 BST, seller added the following information:I was informed by a very reliable source that Trooper P.MABENDA is a confirmed native casualty at the Battle of Isandhlwana. Fighting on the side of the British ForcesOn 15-May-13 at 08:30:03 BST, seller added the following information:I received confirmation that Trooper MABENDA was with SHEPSTONE NATIVE HORSE and was killed at ULUNDI. Not ISANDHLWANA as earlier suggested.
