Scarce British 1855 Pattern Lancaster Bayonet And Scabbard For Sale
A Victorian British 1855 pattern Lancaster bayonet
made by R & W Aston, and dating to 1850 – 1860 period. The piece is in good
condition and would I feel please any buyer looking to add to their collection.
The bayonet measures 29" long, with a
pipe-back blade of 24". The brass pommel and crosspiece are both good
though show signs of age and wear with some surface marks and a small bump to
the outside of the muzzle ring on one side. The release button is rather stiff
but retains its’ spring. The two chequered leather gripsare in good
condition, bearing evidence of inspection stamps either side. The blade remains
in good clean condition though there are small areas of light surface pitting in
places; while the edge shows no evidence of sharpening beyond its factory
finish a fingernail run along its length does reveal an area of roughness some
6” from the tip, with a very small area of loss. The ricasso bears the makers name
of R & W Aston; while the reverse is blank.
The brass-mounted black leather scabbard is
good, with the stitching to the central seam sound and secure apart from a
small length adjacent to the chape. The chape is secured by a staple (though
this has lost the top bar), with a small amount of play. The brass shows signs
of age with a dulled patina, and a knock to one side of the throat. The leather
itself is good and neither torn or holed, though there is an indentation on the
side with the frog stud. Entry and exit to the scabbard is both smooth and
secure.
A genuine and authentic item that may
interest collectors; any inspection can be arranged and is indeed welcome. Because
of size postage to the USA/Australia will be $45/ Europe $38 to allow for
tracking.
