Scarce British 1903 Pattern Bayonet & Scabbard Corps Marked For Sale
A pre-WW1 1903 pattern SMLE rifle bayonet, manufactured
by Wilkinson and dating to September 1907, complete with steel mounted leather
scabbard. Both are in good condition and would I feel enhance any collection
that a buyer was looking to add to. There are a number of worn stamps at the
ricasso, including what appears to be an acceptance date of 5 ’93 which though
worn may indicate this to be a re-hilted blade. I hope
the description is adequate, should you require any further information and/or pictures
please just let me know.
The bayonet measures 16 3/4" long, with
an twin-edged blade of 11 7/8". The pommel and crosspiece are both good
though show signs of age and wear with a degree of light surface pitting in
places. The push-stud moves easily and retains its spring, though the amount of
travel seems slightly less than normal. The pommel is stamped 1. C O & R E
which indicates issue to the Royal Engineers. The two-piece wooden grips show
signs of age, with minor surface marking/staining, but are neither chipped or
cracked. The blade is in good, clean condition with the ricasso bearing the
acceptance date 9 '07, pattern date, kings crown and makers name; while the
reverse bears the War Dept arrow (rubbed) and bend mark. The blade shows some
age with slight mottling in places and a fingernail run along its’ length
reveals no nicks, but some roughness on the bottom edge towards the tip.
The steel-mounted black leather scabbard is
good, with the stitching to the central seam sound and secure. The throat &
chape are secured by staples, with a small amount of play in the top mount. The
steel shows signs of age with a darkened patina. The leather itself is good and
neither torn or holed, with just a degree of smoothing. The mounts both carry Enfield
inspection stamps. Entry and exit to the scabbard is both smooth and secure.
A genuine and authentic item that may
interest collectors. Any inspection can be arranged and is indeed welcome.
Postage to the USA/Australia will be $38 to allow for tracking through Royal
Mail ‘Airsure’. Postage to Europe is $30.
