A superb original musuem grade "Djed Pillar" Egyptian amulet, circa 332 - 30 BC, one of the last few examples from a small premium collection

Beautiful original example from the Foxwell family collection; Mr H G and Miss E Foxwell purchased their collection from the late 1890s until the early 1920s, acquiring from the Forman and Mc Gregor collections (sold by Sotheby's in the early 1900s), originally excavated by renowned British Egyptologist Flinders Petrie

A scarce original example and in premium condition

Pieced at the top so can be worn as a pendant

Egyptian amulets were made from a variety of materials - many from a blue- or green-glazed composition known as Egyptian faience - a ceramic composed of crushed sand or quartz with small amounts of lime and either natron or plant ash. This was coated with a vitreous-alkaline glaze, generally bright blue-green in colour due to the use of copper. Other materials used include glass, semi-precious stones (including carnelian and the prized Lapis lazuli), and less commonly bronze, gold and silver

The djed pillar amulet was one of those placed on the mummy. A number of them could be strung around the lower torso, or placed singly on the upper chest or around the neck. The djed pillar symbolized stability and endurance. Although its form was originally that of a tree whose branches had been cut off, it later became the backbone of the God Osiris

A spell in the Book of the Dead activates such an amulet, saying 'Raise yourself up Osiris! You have your backbone once more, O weary-hearted One; you have your vertebrae!'

The Djed pillar popularly associated with Osiris had its roots in the Memphis God of creation for Ptah was termed the ‘Noble Djed’.  Not only was he a symbol of stability, Ptah was also the symbol of fertility as the sacred Apis bull of Memphis

Memphis became the capital of Ancient Egypt for over eight consecutive dynasties during the Old Kingdom. The city reached a peak of prestige under the 6th dynasty as a centre for the worship of Ptah, the God of creation and artworks. The alabaster Sphinx that guards the Temple of Ptah serves as a memorial of the city's former power and prestige

The Memphis triad, consisting of the creator God Ptah, his consort Sekhmet, and their son Nefertem, formed the main focus of worship in the city

The major excavations of the British Egyptologist Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie, conducted from 1907 to 1912 at Memphis, uncovered the majority of the ruins as seen today. Major discoveries on the site during these excavations included the pillared hall of the temple of Ptah, the pylon of Rameses II, the great alabaster Sphinx, and the great wall north of the palace of Apries. He also discovered the remains of the Temple of Amun of Siamon, and the Temple of Ptah of Merneptah
