Up for sale is a
True First Edition of William S. Burroughs’s First Book, Junkie, plus a Scarce Pre-Publication Advance Uncorrected Proof for
the 50th Anniversary Edition.
First, is a First
Edition of, Junkie: Confessions of an Unredeemed Drug Addict
by William S. Burroughs [written under the pseudonym William Lee]. NY:
Ace Books [D-15] 1953. Bound
back-to-back with Narcotic Agent by
Maurice Helbrant. A
straightforward narrative of Burroughs' experiences with drugs, the publisher
chose to release it couched in an anti-drug context, as a first person example
of the horrors of drug use, and bound with a narcotic agent's memoir. Initially Burroughs’s manuscript was rejected
– the publisher was found by Allen Ginsberg, who met the owner of Ace Books, A.
A. Wyn after Ginsberg had admitted himself to a Hoboken hospital; Wyn was
pressured to consider publishing the work upon the insistence of his nephew,
Carl Solomon. Bound in stiff, color
illustrated wrappers illustrated by Al Rossi.
Very good condition with minor wear to the wrappers and slight wave to
the outer page edges; tanning to pages due to age; fragile pulp paperback.
Second, is an Advance Uncorrected Proof copy of Junkie
by William Burroughs. NY: Penguin Books, 2003. 166 pages.
Fiftieth Anniversary Definitive Edition; Edited with an Introduction by
Oliver Harris. In addition to the original
