Secret Agent Corrigan X-9 Original Art - Al Williamson 12-25 78:
SECRET AGENT CORRIGAN (X-9) ORIGINAL ART....AL WILLIAMSON............DECEMBER 25, 1978............It's going to be a Merry Christmas for some lucky collector! This two panel Corrigan may be the best I've ever owned. It has Al Williamson at his most artistic. Stunning night time opening action panel, with Phil and the abstracted cliff wall, then it's followed up by the powerful deep shadow portrait of a gun-wielding Arab guard. Exceptional daily from the strip...great inking, possibly by Angelo Torres.Few, if any, comic strips have ever gone through the kind of dramatic re-invigoration that occured with the old Dashiell Hammett/Alex Raymond strip Secret Agent X-9 of the mid-30s. As re-envisioned and reinvented by Archie Goodwin and Al Williamson in 1967, it became more than a mere series of detective mysteries, and evolved into an exploration of every type of pulp adventure genre known to man...from lost worlds and dinosaurs to updated versions of The Most Dangerous Game, Fu Manchu and Dr. No, etc. For 12 years under Williamson's pen, Secret Agent Corrigan became as exciting a feature as could be found in daily comics.Al Williamson needs no introduction to comics collectors. His work from the 1950s forward reads like a What' What of comics history. From his early work at EC and his famous collaborations with Frank Frazetta, Angelo Torres and others, to his assisting John Prentice on Rip Kirby to his adaption of Flash Gordon in the 1960s to Star Wars in the 1980s, his mark on the comics field is always remarkable.......always full of beautiful figure drawing, dynamic design and increasing accomplished portraiture. But Secret Agent Corrigan is a high point--his signature work, energetic, vital and chock full of great dark inky masses. The strip offered the latitude in subject to roam the full range of Williamson's art and interests. No zipatone in this one, but there is a small piece of tape in the upper right hand corner (see scans). Otherwise the art is in excellent condition.
