See Saw Margarey Margery Daw Union Daguerreotype Case Woodsmen Nursery Rhyme For Sale
This is case # 136, 'See Saw, Margarey Daw,' in Union Cases by Krainik, Krainik, and Walvoord. Here is some information from Union Cases: "See-Saw, Margarey Daw is an early English rhyme dating to the reign of Charles II (1660 - 1685). It is believed that the tune was originally sung by woodsmen to keep the rhythm of the two-handed saw. Later, children adopted the rhyme for playing on the seesaw. The ditty had undergone considerable lyrical changes by the nineteenth century. The design on the Union case See Saw, Margarey Daw, probably refers to the version published in 1843 in Only True Mother Goose Melodies: See-Saw, Margarey Daw, See saw, jack a daw, What is the craw to do wi' her; She has not a stocking to put on her, And the craw has not one for to gi' her.
