Seth Thomas Antique Large 8 Day Rosewood Empire Mantle Clock 1850 Runs Great For Sale
This is an EXTREMELY BEAUTIFUL RARE AND EXCITING 8 DAY example of a VERY LARGE early Seth Thomas ROSEWOOD Column and Cornice Empire Mantle Clock in Superior NEAR ALL ORIGINAL (RARE!) IN SUPERIOR CONDITION. This is a wonderful clock, one of one in the best condition we've ever seen and very straight! The 8 day time and strike “lyre” movement is signed and strikes the hours on the hour on a large gong. It was made circa 1850. All 3 glasses are wavy and original and the reverse paintings are original (and wonderful!) The original movement runs very well and keeps good time. This is an extremely classy mantle clock in need of a warm loving home.
This clock is weight driven and not spring driven. Weights keep better time than springs as springs lose power as the wind down and cause the clock to slow down somewhat before windings. This clock looks like it was cherished its entire life.
This is one of the early clocks made by Seth Thomas, Sr. , founder of the Seth Thomas Clock Co. Seth Thomas and Thomas Hoadley were apprentices to the first American Clockmaker to use interchangeable parts. His name was Eli Terry. Eli Terry bought land for his first clock “factory” in 1799. After a few years of working with Eli Terry, Seth Thomas set off on his own and started the famous Seth Thomas Clock Company. His company remained in the Seth Thomas family until the 1960s. It flourished so well mainly due to the family making very high quality clocks. (This clock is no exception.)
The name Seth Thomas is synonymous with high quality and good taste. Not always the first on the scene with the latest movement "improvement" or flashy case style, Seth Thomas was slow to adopt changes and only when the marketplace had given it acceptance to other companys' breakthrough advances would Seth Thomas slowly and carefully bring their high quality clocks to the marketplace. The results, however, were always the same. When the Seth Thomas clock arrived it was an instant success and it captured the market.
As the years have passed, the quality of Seth Thomas clocks has been proven over and over. They are the best.
This clock is much more beautiful than the pictures. It is large and measures 32 3/8 inches high, 18 ½ inches wide and 6 ¼ inches deep. This clock works beautifully and keeps good time.
The ROSEWOOD case is extremely beautiful! The case is made of rosewood and is in very good condition especially for its age. The rosewood veneer is 99.99% all there. The professionally refinished finish is great. It was made by a master craftsman for sure by the quality of the construction. The case has it original top and even the original pulleys. The case is really neat as it has its 3 ORIGINAL pieces of BEAUTIFUL VERY WAVY glass on its 2 original doors with the original catches – work great. The pieces of glass are original to the clock with the original matching reverse paintings in very good mostly all there condition. No cracks or chips. This is quite rare as some many of these beautiful hand painted reverse paintings have completely flaked off over the many years. The back is great and original. 2 original large very heavy cast iron weights run the clock! Really runs great.
The dial is a correct replacement in perfect condition! The gong is original. Complete with a crank to wind the clock and THE HEAVY ORIGINAL pendulum. This is the one of the nicest examples of a column and cornice empire clock we've seen in a while. Even the sides are beautiful!
These antique clocks amaze me - could you imagine any other consumer product still working after over 150 years! And the truly amazing thing with proper care they will work easily past the next 200 years! I believe when this clock is 350 years old it will be just about in its prime! If you are looking for a very old antique clock that looks like it was cherished its whole life – this is it! The movement looks great and the wood on the case is almost perfect – including the original door locks. The back of the case is original. Has its original paper label inside. The back of the bottom painting was touched up on the back, the middle picture is perfect as it is. Also the original top is perfect and original.
I wonder what Seth Thomas would think that well over 100 years later his fine product is still working like new and for sale on !

This clock will be packed very very carefully to insure a safe delivery and the buyer is to pay $38.50 for shipping and ins. (The clock is very very large requiring a double oversize box and lots and lots of packing materials) and very heavy – the weights alone weigh 8 pounds each. I will gladly answer any emails promptly. I have always hated that "reserve" when I have offer myself so this fine clock has and a very low starting offer (gulp). We love these clocks and we’ll be glad to help you set up your clock, or answer questions long after the sale via email.
