The case of this clock is extremely beautiful with BLACK AND GREEN FAUX MARBLE ADAMANTINE (not painted) in all around in superior condition. (See pictures) This is rare as many times this type of finish is all cracked with pieces broken and missing. It is a very classy mantle clock in need of a warm loving home. It was made circa 1900. It has a signed LARGE HEAVY DUTY "Seth Thomas Clock Co" 8-day time and strike movement which chimes the half hour on a bell and strikes the hour with a mellow, beautiful sound on a cathedral gong. It is a very strong runner! The movement runs very well and keeps good time. The movement was just cleaned, oiled, pivots polished and bushings added where needed. This clock will not need servicing for many years to come, and is ready for the next 100 years! This is a labor intensive service, with many clockmakers charging 250.00 and up. We recommend having it oiled every 2 to 3 years to keep it in tip-top shape! The Seth Thomas Clock Company was begun in 1810 by Seth Thomas Sr. and has been known for making high quality clocks. With this clock being one of the best models.
Adamantine is an animal of a different color. They are getting extremely popular now. In the 1860’s, French clocks in slate, onyx or marble cases became popular in the United States. These cases were expensive, so the American clock manufacturers produced similar looking cases made of iron or wood. These clocks have become known to collectors as “Black Mantel Clocks”, and were popular from 1880 to 1931. Seth Thomas is well known for their “Adamantine” black mantel clocks, which were made starting in 1882. Adamantine is a celluloid veneer, glued to the wood case. Adamantine veneer was made in black and white, and in colored patterns such as wood grain, onyx and marble. Adamantine veneer was developed by the Celluloid Manufacturing Company of New York City, and was covered by U.S. Patent number 232,037, dated September 7, 1880. Seth Thomas Clock Company purchased the right to use the adamantine veneer in 1881. The case is very beautiful and perfect with its original finish! HAS THE LARGE ORIGINAL COLLUMS IN PERFECT ORIGINAL CONDITION I doubt if the clock has been worked on very much as the screws and screw holes for the movement are tight, with no additional screw holes. The signed dial is all-original and in the best condition we've seen for an original dial, aged to a nice antique patina. Very easy to read. Most of these very old paper dials are completely rubbed away and have needed to be replaced. It has an adjustment for fast and slow on the dial which can be turned by the small end of the large Seth Thomas key, this way you don't need to take the clock down from its shelf to adjust it for slow and fast. The metal around the dial (fancy solid brass) is original with its original glass (no extra screw holes, no dents etc.). The hands are original and perfect (see picture). Still has its original beautiful large ornate matching feet. All of the fancy decorations and columns are original and near perfect, unbelievable! The movement is signed. Complete with the original antique heavy pendulum and a large heavy duty Seth Thomas double-ended key, one end for winding the clock and one end for adjusting the time for slow and fast. Quite rare for a clock to have its original pendulum and key! The rear dust cover is original. The name Seth Thomas is synonymous with high quality and good taste. Not always the first on the scene with the latest movement "improvement" or flashy case style, Seth Thomas was slow to adopt changes and only when the marketplace had given it acceptance to other companys' breakthrough advances would Seth Thomas slowly and carefully bring their high quality clocks to the marketplace. The results, however, were always the same. When the Seth Thomas clock arrived it was an instant success and it captured the market. As the years have passed, the quality of Seth Thomas clocks has been proven over and over. They are the best. Again, this clock runs (and looks) really great and is one of the rare fancy adamantine models! The clock measures 11 ¾ inches high, 7 inches deep and 18 inches wide. These antique clocks are amazing - could you imagine any other consumer product still working after over 100 years! And the truly amazing thing with proper care they will work easily past the next 100 years, with this clock going well beyond that! If you are looking for an antique clock that has all its original parts and looks like it was cherished its whole life this is it! The buyer will not be disappointed! Antique Clocks are a Fine Investment. Each one has a unique quality, as well as appreciating in value and beauty with age. You will become attached to your antique clocks and they will become a meaningful and important part of your life adding untold joy each day you own them. They can be handed down from one generation to another as they increase daily in value.
