The case of this clock is extremely beautiful with a rare color faux marble ADAMANTINE (not painted) in all around in superior condition. The columns are most rare color. (See pictures) Many times this type of finish is all cracked with pieces broken and missing, not this clock! It is a very classy mantle clock in need of a warm loving home. It was made circa 1900.
It has a signed LARGE HEAVY DUTY "Seth Thomas Clock Co" 8-day time and strike early “hip” movement which chimes the half hour and strikes the hour with a mellow, beautiful sound on a cathedral gong. It is a very strong runner!
The movement runs very well and keeps good time.
The movement was just cleaned, oiled, pivots polished and bushings added where needed.
This clock will not need servicing for many years to come, and is ready for the next 100 years! This is a labor intensive service, with many clockmakers charging 250.00 and up. We recommend having it oiled every 2 to 3 years to keep it in tip-top shape! The Seth Thomas Clock Company was begun in 1810 by Seth Thomas Sr. and has been known for making high quality clocks. With this clock being one of the best models. Adamantine is an animal of a different color. They are getting extremely popular now. In the 1860’s, French clocks in slate, onyx or marble cases became popular in the United States. These cases were expensive, so the American clock manufacturers produced similar looking cases made of iron or wood. These clocks have become known to collectors as “Black Mantel Clocks”, and were popular from 1880 to 1931. Seth Thomas is well known for their “Adamantine” black mantel clocks, which were made starting in 1882. Adamantine is a celluloid veneer, glued to the wood case. Adamantine veneer was made in black and white, and in colored patterns such as wood grain, onyx and marble. Adamantine veneer was developed by the Celluloid Manufacturing Company of New York City, and was covered by U.S. Patent number 232,037, dated September 7, 1880. Seth Thomas Clock Company purchased the right to use the adamantine veneer in 1881.
The case is extremely beautiful and near perfect with its original finish! HAS THE LARGE ORIGINAL COLUMNS IN WONDERFUL ORIGINAL CONDITION This fine clock retains its original pendulum and the original key – also very rare indeed! I doubt if the clock has been worked on very much as the screws and screw holes for the movement are tight, with no additional screw holes. The dial is all-original and in the best condition we've seen for an original dial, beginning to age to a nice antique patina. Very easy to read. It has an adjustment for fast and slow on the dial which can be turned by the small end of the original Seth Thomas key, this way you don't need to take the clock down from its shelf to adjust it for slow and fast. The metal around the dial (fancy solid brass) is original, perfect and is aged to a very beautiful patina (no extra screw holes, no dents etc.).
The hands are original and perfect (see picture).
Still has its original beautiful large ornate LARGE perfect matching feet. All of the fancy decorations and columns are original WITH THE ORIGINAL SHINY FINISH, unbelievable! The movement is signed. Complete with the ORIGINAL old antique heavy pendulum and the original Seth Thomas double-ended key, one end for winding the clock and one end for adjusting the time for slow and fast. Quite rare for a clock to have its original pendulum and key! The rear door is original AND PERFECT with the ST! What a wonderful clock!
The name Seth Thomas is synonymous with high quality and good taste.
Not always the first on the scene with the latest movement "improvement" or flashy case style, Seth Thomas was slow to adopt changes and only when the marketplace had given it acceptance to other companys' breakthrough advances would Seth Thomas slowly and carefully bring their high quality clocks to the marketplace. The results, however, were always the same. When the Seth Thomas clock arrived it was an instant success and it captured the market.
As the years have passed, the quality of Seth Thomas clocks has been proven over and over. They are the best.
Again, this clock runs (and looks) really great and is one of the rare fancy models! The clock measures 10 ¾ inches high, 7 inches deep and 17 inches wide. These antique clocks are amazing - could you imagine any other consumer product still working after over 100 years! And the truly amazing thing with proper care they will work easily past the next 100 years, with this clock going well beyond that! If you are looking for an antique clock that has all its original parts and looks like it was cherished its whole life this is it! The buyer will not be disappointed!
This fine clock movement has been completely overhauled and cleaned. The main cause of antique clocks’ no longer working is that they need a good cleaning. Over time, the oil in the pivots gathers dust and particles of metallic grit, the result of normal wear. Also the oil breaks down and becomes thick and gummy, and actually acts like glue. The result is that the gears no longer turn freely, and the clock stops. A good cleaning usually is all the clock needs to be almost like new again! The cleaning procedure involves taking the movement out of the case and totally dismantling the movement. All the gears, rods, etc., are taken off of the clock plates and are hand scrubbed and inspected for wear. The springs are taken out of the barrels, stretched out, and hand cleaned and polished. The plates are thoroughly cleaned. Then all the parts are placed in an ultrasonic cleaning machine for the final cleaning. The pivots are polished on the lathe and the pallets are polished. Bushings are installed on any pivot holes that have become “egg shaped” from wear to make them perfectly round again. The movement is reassembled and oiled. (We use only the finest German Clock Oil). The springs are placed back and greased with top-quality synthetic spring grease and the complete movement is placed on a "running stand" and run for several days to insure all is well. It is easier to detect misalignments, bent rods, and worn pivots and gears while it is running in full view. We like to run the movement for over a week to be sure it will run a full 8 days on one winding, and that everything is well. By that time, any problems will usually show up. The final result is a movement that runs just like new! If you like we will include instructions and hints to keep it that way for the next 100 years (or more!).
