Seventy Letters - Bills - Receipts - Bangor, Me Postmaster Mark 1844 - Stamps For Sale
This box came out of the attic as an estate was being settled. Most of the papers have a connection to the families of Baker or Burnham in Littleton, NH. The earliest date that I am sure of is 1834. This is on the letter that was in a wrapper. The wrapper has the postal marking for Bangor, Maine. It was originally sealed with wax. I believe that anot her is dated 1832, but am not positive. I found nothing later than the 1890's. There are receipts, letters, bills, invoices with great graphics, financialpapers for the church, notations for the lodge, envelopes with early stamps and more. The frugality with which they handled paper is amazing. Tiny scraps of paper have business receipts written on them. They were then folded in quarters--or more--to be kept. And then the blank side of the paper was used for something else. The papers seem to be reasonably clean and in good condition. Of course, some of the oldest ones have a bit of wear, especially where they were folded. They have no smells. This is a great look back into New England nearly two hundred years ago!
