Museum Quality Meiji Japanese Satsuma lidded koroby Ryozan.
Brand/Provenance: Satsuma, Japan.
Age: Meiji Period (1868 - 1912).
Size: 12cm in width (widest section) X 10.5cm in height.
Artist/signature: Signed "Ryozan Sei" (Ryozan made) to the underside of the base with 4 gilt characters in a black seal. The mark is set above a Yasuda Company trade mark and below an Imperial Mon. There is also a small 2 piece impressed mark although it's notlegibleto me.
Condition: The body is in superb condition with NO chips, cracks or wear. The only issue is that one of the three feat has beenreattached. The lid is also not original, although it is genuine Satsuma.
Comments: An exhibition quality Meiji Japanese Satsuma Koro. The piece is exquisitely decorated withsixhand painted scene panels which depict variousscenesfrom Japanese life. These include colourful wisteria vines, Geishas and children, Chrysanthemum flowers, JapaneseEmperors, swallows flying between branches of blossoms, and Samurai's appearing before an Emperor. The painting is absolutely magnificent and the detail is the finest I have seen for a long time. The top and bottom rims feature various geometric border patterns and floral designs.
