Silver Art Nouveau Perfume Scent Flask Bottle Repousse Vinaigrette For Sale
SILVER ART NOUVEAU PERFUME SCENT FLASK BOTTLE REPOUSSE VINAIGRETTE
Upon for sale is a wonderful antique silver scent flask most likely from the 19th century.
The design is art nouveau style with what appears to me to be a dogwood flower and leaf pattern on the front and leaf and vine on the back. This piece is unmarked but a local jeweler has assured me it is sterling silver but he did not test it. It weighs 16 grams (see picture). The discoloration in the leaves and around the neck is black oxidation and simply the lighting not a copper undercoat as it is appearing in the pictures.
Vinaigrettes were carried by both sexes and sniffed constantly when in public places as a antidote to possible infections or to kill the unpleasant odors.
Prior to the introduction of soaps, and their easy accessibility, people needed a reliable means to mask smells and odors of their environment. The vinaigrette was used for that purpose. Designed as a miniature container with a small sponge that could be saturated with sweet smelling perfumes and oils, it was held under the nose to mask less than fragrant surroundings.
Condition: Very good. There are no dings that I have been able to detect. However, the chain is missing. The top screws off for filling but the last thread seems to be a little stripped as it loosens a little on screwing down too tightly but does not come off - a simple half turn takes it back to tight.
Size: 3.25" long, .75" wide and .25" thick.
