Sir Muirhead Bone Signed Drypoint Etching Of Mosque In Muttra No. 217 For SaleSIR MUIRHEAD BONE SIGNED DRYPOINT ETCHING OF MOSQUE IN MUTTRA NO. 217
LISTED FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION IS A LOVELY DRYPOINT ETCHING SIGNED "MB" BOTH IN THE LOWER LEFT OF THE PRINT AND ALSO TO THE LOWER RIGHT BELOW THE PRINT. TO THE LOWER LEFT BELOW THE PRINT IS WRITTEN No. 217 AS PICTURED. THIS ETCHING IS IN A ARTISTS BOARD FRAME AND WHEN THE FRAME IS LISTED ALSO AS PICTURED THERE ARE A NUMBER OF MARKINGS. THE LOWER CENTER READS "MOSQUE IN MUTRA" OR MUTTRA KNOWN AS THE MOSQUE OF ABO-UL-NABI LOCATED IN INDIA . THIS IMAGE IS NOT DATED HOWEVER BONE WAS KNOWN TO HAVE DONE QUITE A BIT OF TRAVELING BETWEEN 1917 AND 1923 WHICH IS LIKELY WHEN THIS WORK WAS PRODUCED. ALONG WITH THE NAME WRITTEN IN PENCIL ARE NUMBERS LIKELY INDICATING SIZES. THE REVERSE OF THE ARTIST FRAME IS SIGNED CLEARLY NOT BY THE ARTIST AS HIS NAME IS SPELLED INCORRECTLY "BY SIR MIURHEAD BONE". BONE WAS NOT KNIGHTED UNTIL 1937 AND AS THIS PRINT IS NOT SIGNED "SIR" BY THE ARTIST, IT IS DOUBTFUL THAT IT WAS CREATED AFTER 1937. THE IMAGE ITSELF MEASURES 4.75" X 6 7/8", THE OPENING MEASURES 5 3/8" X 7 3/8" AND THE ENTIRE FRAME MEASURES 13 3/8" X 17 2/3". THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF GREAT HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE. A FRESH ESTATE FIND.
"Sir Muirhead Bone (23 March 1876 – 21 October 1953) was a Scottish etcher, drypoint and watercolour artist. The son of a printer, Bone was born in Glasgow and trained initially as an architect, later going on to study art at Glasgow School of Art. He began printmaking in 1898, and although his first known print was a lithograph, he is better known for his etchings and drypoints. His subject matter was principally related to landscapes, architecture (which often focussed on urban construction and demolition sites) and industry." (EXERPT FROM WIKIPEDIA).
