SMALL EARLY 19TH CENTURY FOLLY/GATEHOUSE & MOTIF SAMPLER BY SARAH CROSS - c.1840:

Small early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Sarah Cross aged 12. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1840 or slightly earlier. This little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with two rows of alphabet letters and border patterns with a central folly/gatehouse building beneath flanked by a tree and flower motif then underlined with a triangulated border. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central tree with a bird and floral urn to the left and right. Sarah\'s name and age are contained in three separate plaques beneath with a diamond flanked by two crowns below them. The whole thing is then surrounded by a meandering floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a few small areas of damage. As can be seen from the last photo, the sampler has been glued down onto a backing cloth, a fair while ago judging by the condition of the cloth. As such, I\'m not able to see its reverse. But the colours of the thread appear good with some bleeding to the green stitch work. The last photo also shows how the right side edge of the linen is away from the backing cloth and hopefully also shows how the sampler has been attached to a fine backing gauze as well being glued down.Measures 8\" x 9 3/4\" - sampler size.
