Society of the Army of the Cumberland Certificate, Signed by General George H. Thomas
Please look carefully at all of the photos, and read all of the following information before offerding
This is a beautiful old post Civil War document. The Army of the Cumberland was one of The most famous Union Army fighting groups. The Society of The Army of the Cumberland was a veterans group formed in 1868, and this certificate is for the membership of a Captain A. C. Ford. It was issued in 1881. It is signed in ink by General George H. Thomas. The problem is that he died in 1870, so I'm guessing that he signed a large number of these when they were printed in 1868. This supposition would be supported by the transverse counter-signature of a later president, whose signature I cannot quiet read, but I believe the title "President" is underneath it, as shown in the 7th photo. The condition of this document leaves something to be desired, but it could be properly and professionally framed and the faults would barely show. There is a thin area at the top center, with some holes, as shown in the last photo. The engraving of the detail in this certificate is stunningly beautiful. Someone has hand written the names of many of the battles and engagements in the margins of the document, and it looks very much like the same ink as the signature of the secretary, but not the handwriting. Probably done at the time of the issuing (1881), but after the signature of General Thomas (1868).The document was badly framed, and was stained by non-archival matting used as backing, in irregular to this piece rectangular shapes, which show in the last two photos. There is quite a bit of separation along the fold lines as well, but it is still (but barely) intact as one piece. This interesting historical document is obviously worth more than the very low starting offer, and are being sold with .

PLEASE NOTE: I have been advised that the George Thomas signature is a rubber stamp facsimile of his signature, and after examining the signature with a 20X lens I agree... I can see a thin ridge line of ink outlining the lines of the signature, as a stamping would produce.
