Spain, 1808, unfranked
folded circular, sent by a George W. Irving in Madrid to John Leonard, Esq,
Consul of the United States in Barcelona, concerning irregularities found in passport and other travel protection being
granted by US Consuls in some of the Ports of Spain, to seamen waiting for
passage, with the names of two or more seamen in each document. The circular stipulates
that each seamen traveling back to the US should have their own passport, with
marks of his person included, as is usual in all regular passsports. Document
has been stored unfolded, with tone spots and foxing, as shown, however still
easily readable. Very nice piece of maritime history, with usual tear out
around seal, as shown, and some pencil notations, otherwise fine, with no
additional faults.
