S.s. Yawata Maru 1940 Nippon Yusen Kaisha Nyk Photos And Deck Plan:
S.S. YAWATA MARU 1940 NIPPON YUSEN KAISHA NYK PHOTOS AND DECK PLAN. This 22-page booklet measures 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches (24 x 19 cm) and is dated August 1940. The booklet contains one page of text that describes the ship, the second of three sisters, and states that they were planned to enter service between Japan and Europe but because of the "present situation in Europe" (i.e. the Second World War) they were being diverted to Transpacific service. Her career in Yokohama—San Francisco service became shortened after the United States and Japan entered te Second World War in 1941. In 1942 Yawata Maru became an aircraft carrier and was sunk by an American submarine in September 1944. Thus any material on Yawata Maru is difficult to find. This booklet contains artist's renderings and photographs of the public rooms in First and Second classes. A four-page fold-down shows the deck plan of both classes, detailed right down to the position of portable tables. The front cover and the following eight pages have a tear of about half an inch (one cm), and the cover itself is very slightly shabby. On the whole, though, the booklet is in good condition. It is, as one would expect, a very scarce item.
