STERLING SILVER Vintage Pyx For Communion Swift & Fisher w/ Apostles Cross

Vintage Holy Communication case, also called a Pyx.This was used by Roman Catholic priests on sick calls. Measures about 1 3/4" in diameter.

Gold wash on the interior. Back side has dimple in middle, see photo. Clasp and hinge work fine. Both are tight. Marked "Sterling" with Schmitt & Fisher of MassachusettsHallmark on the stem. Came from St John Fisher College in Rochester NY many years ago . Apostles' Cross design. Also known as the Treflée, Botonée or Cathedral Cross. The three circles or discs at the ends of each arm in a Christian context represents the Trinity but was probably also copied from earlier Celtic Druidry, where the circles or rings represent the three dominions of earth, sky and sea. The decoration appears hand done.

It weighs approximately .95 oz on my Pitney Bowes postage scale. I am not responsible for any inaccuracies of this scale. Very good condition. The chased decoration is still sharp. The case snaps shut tightly. The gold wash on the inside is still bright and shiny.
