Sterne, Lawrence (1713-1768): Tristram Shandy. (Works of Laurence Sterne; Containing the Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gent.(AND), A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy, Sermons, Letters, &c., With a Life of the Author Written by Himself.)
London: Henry G. Bohn, 1865 Sterne was an Anglo-Irish novelist and an Anglican clergyman. He is best known for these two novels - Tristram Shandy and Sentimental Journey published in 1759. On offer here is a very attractive pair of books, Vols.1 and 2 in this edition. Green leather with beautifully tooled and decorated spine having 5 raised bands and six compartments each with gilt flower or title details. Size is 8vo, approx 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches (14 x 22cm). The text block edges are flecked predominately with red. Vol.1 has 393 pages, a frontispiece portrait of Sterne and a facing title page with engraving of a lady with a dog, followed by an additional title page. Vol.2 has pages 393 to 803. Externally and internally condition is generally superb. There is a hint of dullness along two edges of the second volume; some moderate foxing is confined to frontispiece and first title sheets of Vol.1, all other contents being absolutely clean and fresh with no inscriptions. Fine. ("When Tristram Shandy first appeared, Sterne was heralded as a second Rabelais, Cervantes, or Swift and was condemned, especially when his clerical profession was disclosed, as an immoral hypocrite. Controversy continues about the precise nature of Sterne's contribution to literature, but no one any longer denies him a place among the most important eighteenth-century writers" -ODNB).
