Stunning Early 1840's American Naval Daguerreotype:
STUNNING EARLY 1840'SAMERICAN NAVAL DAGUERREOTYPE
ATTENTION ALL COLLECTORS OF AMERICAN HISTORICAL NAVAL DAGUERREOTYPES!
Here is a 1/4 plate American daguerreotype from the early 1840'swhich may date to 1844-45.
The mat is gold coloured card or paper, not brass. The case has a cornucopia design which I
have seen on other American daguerreotypes from the 1843-45 period. Incidentally, the case
is in very good condition, very clean and smooth, fully functioning.
Size of plate: 4 1/4 x 3 1/4 inches or 10.7 x 8.3 CM
Young man dressed in Naval attire, sports large gilt painted epaulettes on his jacket shoulders.
His pose is somewhat relaxed.
The daguerreotype was resealed by someone in 1982.
There are no marks, scratches, wipes, dings on the plate.
A few light browntarnish spots can be seen on the surface of the daguerreotype.
This is an unusual and desirable collector's piece. Further Naval/historical data research is
necessary. Unfortunately, I do not possess the expertise to offer any further information regarding
this daguerreotype or respond to questions adequately. I have no knowledge of the sitter's rank or uniform and do not know t which ships he was affiliated with. I do know that in dating the daguerreotype we are looking at a pre-1845 period by
the style of the mat/case and appearance of the sitter andquality of the image. I have probably handled over 10,000 daguerreotypes since the 1970's when I became interested in them. Therefore, it would be safe to assume I know a little about them.
