D & E COSTUME JEWLRY
Juliana costume jewelry was produced by DeLizza & Elster, which was founded in 1947 to manufacture everything from buttons and buckles to brooches and pendants for such well known costume jewelers as Hattie Carnegie, Hobe, Kenneth J. Lane, and Weiss.
In 1967, their noted partner and designer Frank DeLizza and Harold Elster decided to develop their own brand of jewelry by placing paper tags with the Juliana trademark on some of their pieces. The brand lasted barely two years therefore most pieces have no tags or markings.
Vintage Juliana pieces (which include unlabeled pieces created before 1967 as well as those with Gloria and Tara hang tags) typically feature brilliant colored rhinestones such as aurora borealis, clear crystals, and faux opals. Striking colors such as purple and teal or green and pink are routinely combined. Some Juliana pieces have large speckled (or "Easter egg") cabochons and are set within rings of smaller, colored stones.
Unlike most jewelry of the period, most Juliana pieces are almost all stone, with very little metal showing. Cluster settings for brooches are popular. In addition some stone cuts are pears, baguettes, ovals, and rounds. Some of the more fancy vintage Juliana pieces have stones cut into the shapes of keystones, arrows, anchors, and hearts.
Brooch designs can be flat to domed to tiered, while earrings are arranged in clusters, cascades, or clumps with dangling jewels swinging free. Some pieces resemble birds; others looks like snowflakes or shooting stars. Milk glass is occasionally used as a cool accent or centerpiece, as are so-called watermelon rhinestones which catch light and return a rainbow of colors.
The metal mountings on vintage Juliana helps to identify real piece from fakes. Earrings are mostly clip-backed; screw backs are rare. Necklaces are mostly clasped with J-hooks, which allow the wearer to adjust the length. Light necklaces have single hooks, heavier ones use double hooks, and some hooks have a larger rhinestone on the end.
Juliana's vintage bracelets normally have fold-over clasps, some with ridges or stripes, some with arrow patterns, and some with rhinestones. Box-and-tongue clasps are used on flat-backed bracelets, clamper bracelets are hinged, and bracelets of all types frequently have safety chains.
One of the real growth areas in collecting over the last
decade has been in vintage costume jewelry.
The popularity of both collecting and wearing vintage costume jewelry is mainly due to a growing appreciation for the fact that you can buy exceptional craftsmanship style, and highly innovative designs for substantially less than you can buy precious stone and gold/silver jewelry. In fact many times you will find far more interesting designs in costume jewelry than you do with the precious equivalent, designs such as these. This is particularly true of many of the high-end pieces made from the late 1920s to the mid-1950s. After the Great Depression in the late 20s and early 30s, due to slow sales, many of the real talented designers and artists who had been working in the precious jewelry industry moved into costume jewelry, taking their considerable skills with them. This was during a time when trend-setting clothes designers such as Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli and Hattie Carnegie were promoting the idea, for the first time, that it was “cool” to wear jewelry made from non-precious materials.
