All original Compaq SLT 286s/20 Portable. Boots up only on the floppy disks, not the hard disk. Error message:“Theconfiguration memory device indicates it has lost power\".I researched the issue and found out that, for virtually all of these old laptops, a battery soldered to one of the boards has died and replacing it is difficult, only to be undertaken by a technician. The part that failed is called acombination Dallas DS1287 battery/clock and is no longer available. Two solutions were proposed on-line, one adding a button battery, another a non-hardware solution. One caveat also: once this fix is in place, I don\'t know if the C drive will be accessible or function. So, please consider this computer only in light of the fact that there are significant risks:

1. The issue with the Dallas battery/clock (and no replacement parts are available)

2. Uncertainty as to whether the C drive is functional (it worked 40 years or so ago when it was last used, but the lubricant, for instance, may be now dried up). I don\'t know anything about this, so please expect the worst.

The good part - the computer looks almost new, in spite of its age. Included are full documentation - 3 thick manuals and all original operating disks, plus a full set of WordPerfect disks and and original Lotus Magellan installation disk. My wife purchased this new when she was a sales manager and took meticulous care of it.
What I thought meant it booted (the A disk shows on the screen) evidently does not mean it boots. It just means that the computer is accessing the floppy disks. See the photos. As you can see, I tried to enter 4/22/2018 as the date, but due to a Y2K problem, it would not accept it, so I entered 1999 as the system date. A little nostalgia thrown in for free:)
The only missing piece, physically, is the laptop battery, which I threw away when it no longer would keep a charge. The battery is not needed for the computer to work on AC, if the hardware issues can be resolved. If you want a battery for looks, you can buy a \"parts\" computer that includes the battery for a very low cost.

If you are looking for a Compaq SLT 386s/20 Portable Computer, you will not find one in better condition cosmetically. There aren\'t even any scratches.
