Superb 19c Chinese Carved Sandalwood Card Case W Large Figures In High Relief For SaleFor your consideration we have here a superbly crafted 19c Chinese carved calling card case in sandalwood executed in high relief and this case was produced in Canton, China somewhere around the late 19c Qing Dynasty for export to the West. This particular case appears to have been handled very infrequently by the way it has remained close in color to its original light tan sandalwood as the light and elements will always darken any wood objects especially this material. This is a good size case being almost 4-1/2" high and is deeply worked in high relief to both sides depicting many larger than normal figures engaged in conversation and trivial pursuits wearing hats, carrying bowls and fans amoungst outdoor settings. The manyfiguresare surrounded by willow, prunus and dogwood trees as well as plants, rockery, fences and railings along with pagodas andmasonrysided buildings along with a variety of other forms of The sides are lightly carved in a continuous leaf boarder and the shape of the case is considered 'Canton School' style with the sandalwood being very lightweight as much of the material was removed in the carving process toachievethe depth. Condition is excellent with only very light wear and a small amount of soiling as one figure's head has a spot of dirt on it and other than a short insignificant little crack in one of the inside corners of the lid this case is superb. Sizes: Height 4-3/8" x Width 2-3/4" x Thickness 5/8". A great card case for the collector and even if you have one in your collection already there are no two alike so offer to win.
