SUPERB 19th Century Spanish Carved Wood Holy Infant Santo Jesus Sculpture:
$1249.99

Superb 19th century (circa 1830) Northern Spanish Holy Infant (Baby Jesus)
Entirely hand carved in wood and polychrome painted with glass eyes.
Total height: 51 cm (20.07 inches)
Provenance: This sculpture was part of our private collection, it was purchased at an antiques shop in Barcelona many years ago. We\'ve recently sold our place in Southern Spain (http://sotogrande.us)and re-located to a completely different style of house in the South of France. So in the coming weeks we\'ll be listing a number of very special items from the old house, including an outstanding 18th century solid silver thurible (censer), an important late 18th century Qajar Persian tray and a large early 19th century Aubusson tapestry.
Notes on the item: Good overall condition, old minor restorations to both feet. Head, arms and rest of the body in excellent condition. The sculpture would have originally been dressed and had a halo crown which is no longer present. The style is very much idealized, which was a characteristic of the early Empire period made popular by Napoleon in the first quarter of the 19th century. The size is impressive as most versions of this sculpture are of quite small proportions, rarely exceeding 10 inches in height.
Historical Notes: This depiction of the Holy Infant is known as the Niño de la Bola.Child of the Ball or the Holy Child of the Ball, in traditional iconography, is an artistic representation of the Baby Jesus Christ in which he holds a ball in his left hand. Essentially it is a Holy Child, Jesus or God Child carrying in his hand an orb which symbolizes his power over the world ; Variations include representations on the lap of the Virgin Mary (which in that case symbolizes his throne).Notable examples of this type of sculpture include the Niño de la Bola of the Colegiata de Borja Museum in Northern also the sculpture at the San Blas church in Salzburg:
