This is a superb & rare example of an early antique .. VictorianStaffordshire ..`Queen Victoria on Horse-Back`Figure, ... made in the Staffordshire Potteries, ... and dating from circa. 1840. The figureis superbly modelled, in the round, ..as the young Queen Victoria on horse-back. The figure is sitting side-saddle, ... her right hand behind the horse`s head, .. her left arm across her waist, holding the reins, ... wearing a bonnet with head scarf and a long dress, ... (the order of the garter can be seen on the left side of her chest), ... decorated withboth over-glaze & under-glaze `cobalt-blue` enamels, .. and applied floral & `parsley` decoration, ... as shown in the photos. A quality figure ... as several moulds would have been used to create the figure`s arms .. the horse`s legs, tail & head.
This figure is one of a pair .. the other figure of Prince Albert .. is also being offered for sale this week. The pair of figures were probably made to commemorate the couple`s marriage in 1840.
The figureisin very good There are no cracks or chips. There is a little age-related wear to the over-glaze enamels, ... this is minimal .. as shown in the photos. Base length : 4.4 ins. / 11.1 cms.
