Superb Antique 19thc Embossed Solid Silver Wine Taster / Tastevin, Lon 1878:
A beautifully decorated antique 19th Century solid sterling silver tri-handled wine taster with scalloped rim, embossed to the base of the bowl with a Roman scene:
A gladiator in a chariot is
defeating two figures of Boreas, half man with serpents for legs, the Greek God
of the cold North wind. Each of the three ornate double C scroll handles is
surmounted with Faun head finials.
Fauns also known as 'Satyrs' were thought to be tricksters, associated with the 'sensual life', they were believed to indulge in wild orgies and were linked to the Roman God 'Dionysus' the God of wine.
The inside of the bowl bears full British hallmarks assayed in London in 1878.
