SUPERB ANTIQUE/VINTAGE BLACK FOREST WALL MOUNTED CARVED BEAR HEAD
I don't like to call things "rare", as most are not, but despite a vigorous search of the internet, I can not find another of this type. Please make use of the enlarge feature on the photos to fully appreciate the detail, colour and patina this wonderful bear displays.
Black Forest carvings are not my area of expertise, so any guess on dating it is based solely on the wonderful colour/patination found on the top of the head, were it has been lovingly polished over the years. My guess on age would be 1920.....but I leave the definitive answer to the experts.
The carving is crisp and very detailed, and the beady orange eyes look to be made of glass. The bear has its mouth open with four fangs (one of which is missing the tip). To the rear is a "staple" fitting for hanging the carving on the wall (it had a large, old brass wallhanger screwed onto it, I have removed this as it was not original, but will include it if required).
The head measures 4 1/4 inches in length, 3 1/2 inches in width, with a depth from nose to back of 4 1/4 inches.
Wonderful skill, beautiful subject, with stunning colour/patination. A fine combination in any carving.
