A fine Chinese Kraak porcelain bottle vase, decorated in blue with horses and foliage, Wanli period, ca. 1600
Top quality Wanli porcelain was often exported to The Netherlands, of old having a strong commercial link with China. This type of porcelain was usually called Kraak Porselein, named after the Portuguese 'Carraca' ships, containing Wanli porcelain, looted by the Dutch, and put up for sale in Holland in the early 1600's. Kraak porcelain later was imported to Holland by the Dutch East Indies Company, which had special trading privileges to China and Japan. The wealthy Dutch upper class adored the subtle oriental porcelain and large quantities were shipped to Holland from the 16th century onwards.
On offer is this beautiful antique Chinese porcelain blue and white decorated porcelain pear shaped bottle vase. It dates from the Ming Period and was produced in the Yingdezhen area during the reign of the Chinese emperor Wanli (1573-1619). The exquisite and detailed painting, the intense cobalt blue color of the decoration and the milky white porcelain indicate that this vase is certainly a top quality Wanli piece. The vase is richly decorated by hand with two stylized running horses, entangled with foliage and geometrical patterns. The base is plain glazed and is unmarked.
This early Kraak vase displays very nicely, but has a small rim restoration. The neck was profesionally restored. This restoration covers the three horizontal concentric lines. There are no other damages or repairs. Please view the pictures, which give a good impression of it's quality and attractive condition. The vase stands nearly 19 inches (230 mm) high. The foot ring measures c. 7 cm across. This early bottle vase is an excellent example of export porcelain from the reign of Wanli, of which I guarantee age (late 16th or early 17th century) and authenticity. It's provenance is a Dutch private collection.
