This is a superb Staffordshire figurine group of Thomas Smith and William Collier of which:

During our research we have been informed it certainlydates from the mid 19th century.

Dates c1866.

Well coloured.

Pottery.

Featured in the Stafford Portrait Figures of the Victorian Era by P. D. Gordon Pugh.

Text of: Well Coloured. Confirms the date of c1866. Rare.

Two men stand underneath an arbour. The man on the left, Thomas Smith, is dressed in a round hat, neckerchief, long jacket, waistcoat, breeches & gaiters. He has his right hand, in which he holds a revolver, in his jacket pocket and grasps the shoulder of the man on the right, William Collier with his left hand. Collier is wearing a beaver hat, long jacket, waistcoat and breeches and a game bag is slung from his right shoulder. He holds the barrel of a fowling piece in his left hand and clutches Smiths lapel with his right hand. There are two dead pheasants on the ground and a dog is attacking Colliers right leg.

Collier shot Smith dead and was publically executed in the last public hanging in the uk which drew thousands of observers.

Mounted onto the decorative hollowed base with the gilt decoration.

Areas of bocage to the base and the arbor

It has an overall height of about 13.25inches.

Max base size ofabout 7.5 x 2.75inches.

Condition: Considering the age: the overall condition is excellent and is not subject to any major blemishes.

A fine series of hairlines underneath the base:
