Stunning hand-carved woodpecker in a tree with a bug in his beak, done by an unknown, possibly Native American maker; no visible signature. This wonderful bird and his tree sit on a wood base, the piece measures approx. 8.5\" high. The skill of the artist is amazing; the bird is holding a fat grub in his beak, his feathers and feet are all expertly detailed; he looks like he\'s going to fly away with his prize at any moment.The naturally shaded material of the bird and tree appears to be petrified antler, horn or maybe wood, it is definitely organic material. There is an old sticker on the bottom of the wood base, but not much information, just some letters and numbers. The wood base has a dramatic light/dark contrast in the grain, not sure what kind of wood it is. I have no information other than it comes from an estate collection of fine Native American items, and is at least 40 years old. In very fine estate condition, offered \'as found\'.
