Superb C1900 B&d Bawo Dotter Elite Limoges Pink Cabinet Plate, Thoughtful Woman:
On the reverse of this lovely pink and gold cabinet plate is the green underglaze backstamp number 5 of Elite Works, also known as Bawo & Dotter, one of the great Limoges firms at the turn of the last century.A small green backstamp with the words "Elite L" over the word France, it was in use from 1900 onward, according to the third edition of the Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain by Mary Frank Gaston.
The plate features abeautifully hand paintedportrait of a pensive young woman in an elegant filmy gown of purple, green and white, against a backdrop of tiny white flowers. Its finely detailed workis in keeping with the exceptionally high quality that made the company's porcelain so famous, and so coveted.
The style of the artworksuggests - but does not confirm - that the plate wasproduced quite early in the 20th century.
The plate is 9 1/8 inches in diameter and in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, scratches, nicks, stains, repairs, crazing or significant wear. There issome darkening of one section of the rim on the base and some embedded black marks that were created during the manufacturing process. These arevisible in the photos.
